Mosaic Dance Theater Company presents an evening of
dance from the Near East, which includes traditional folkloric dance
and contemporary interpretive and fusion pieces. The program will
be presented at the Hudson Guild Theater, 441 W. 26th St., New York,
NY, and runs June 3, 4, 5 and 6, 2010.
Mosaic Dance Theater Company, under the Artistic Direction of Samara
Adell, the company’s choreographer, will perform vibrant
choreographies from the repertoire (a contemporary Egyptian oriental
dance, a Tunisian scarf dance, a Saiidi suite featuring cane,
cymbals and balas), as well as new pieces (a Turkish
tambourine dance, a Moroccan Shikhatt dance, classical oriental
dance), and a story-theater retelling of a folktale from Oman. An
internationally respected teacher and performer, Ms. Adell was
protégé to the late master dancer/teacher/choreographer Ibrahim
Farrah. As principal dancer in Mr. Farrah’s Near East Dance Group,
she performed in some of America’s most prestigious venues including
Carnegie Hall, and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Also
featured in the program is an exuberant Lebanese folkloric dance
choreographed for the company by Mosaic’s Special Guest
Choreographer, Ghassan Fadlallah. Born into a performing family in
Lebanon, Mr. Fadlallah has lived and breathed music and dance all
his life. He joined Lebanon’s acclaimed Caracalla Dance Company,
studying intensely while performing on the world’s finest stages for
20 years, and becoming the company’s lead dancer. Now teaching
Middle Eastern folkloric dance and theatrical expression workshops
worldwide, his expertise is unsurpassed. The production features
Mosaic dancers Samara, Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Nina Brewton,
Nahoko Sugiyama, Jennifer Bocian, Dianna Dwyer and Rie Sueyoshi.
Joining Mosaic for this production is Special Guest Artist Elena
Lentini and her Caravanserai Dance Theatre, presenting a Moorish
suite that includes two New York premieres: Ms. Lentini in a solo
dance, “Remembering Alba”, and Ravel’s “Bolero” danced by the
Caravanserai company, Andrea Beeman, Elizabeth Ewald, Anne
Hitchcock, Kerri O’Neill, and Yoshina. Also on Ms. Lentini’s
Spanish-themed program is the popular “Vamos a Baile”, performed by
Ms. Lentini and Marie Aquirre. Ms. Lentini’s theater works and
teaching continue to innovate the dance while honoring its
traditions. “Ms. Lentini... (Makes) a strong case for Oriental
Dance as a theatrical dance form.” (Jennifer Dunning, NY Times).
Mosaic Dance Theater Company, a NJ non-profit,
public benefit corporation was founded in 2003 by Morgiana Celeste
Varricchio, MDTC’s Producing Artistic Director. The company
evolved out of the dance and theater productions originally
developed by Ms. Varricchio for New York Performing Artist Company (NYPACo).
Touring since 1992, NYPACo productions have been presented in
schools, universities, and at such venues as Lincoln Center, the
Brooklyn Museum, Paper Mill Playhouse, the Caramoor Center for Music
and the Arts, the Nashville Institute for the Arts, and the NY
International Fringe Festival. Samara Adell, MDTC’s Choreographer
and Artistic Director for Dance, began her collaboration with Ms.
Varricchio in 2000, and since MDTC’s inception, the company has
premiered many original dance works, and has toured them to
performing arts venues, universities and schools.
